New Case for Spring 2010

Return to Play - Case of the Month

Tara, age 16 -  Softball

Introduction - Helmet Strike with no loss of consciousness

Tara is a varsity softball player who is one of the junior captains.  She sustained an injury during a preseason game resulting from the helmets of two players striking one another while on the base path.  She was not rendered unconcscious by the collision which looked somewhat benign to her coaches.  Tara had focal pain at the injury site over her left ear and cervical pain.

Tara complained of fatigue and head pain immediately after the game was over.  She remained home from school the next day and saw her pediatrician and was diagnosed with concussion.

Academic History

Tara is an excellent student enrolled in honors and level one classes in a local high school.  The school was very accommodating with the re-entry care plan submitted by Dr. Sefton.  Many people now are aware that athletes should remain out of play during recovery but sometimes are surprised when school accommodations are recommended.
